Call of Duty: Ghosts Review

General / 10 April 2018

As promised, this is one of the many posts I will be uploading today with old game reviews/ knowledge videos. I created this review back when this game was released but still think that it showcases my love for games. I think that over these past years my scope in the type of games I play has broadened, along with my understanding of video games.

This new first-person shooter only just hit shelves today(November 5th, 2013) and is already become a fast-selling game. The Activision team, in LA, have done it again with the highly anticipated Call of Duty Ghosts title. The game is available on both current and next-gen consoles, including the PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4. Although some critics have mixed feelings when it comes to the gun on gun action that this game is traditionally known for, we see the game take a different approach to the multiplayer mode. By leaving the feeling of been bombarded from the air, the game focusses more ground-based support; resulting in fewer people running around like headless chickens looking for the enemies UAV, which is now a ground-based Sit-com. With the new Marksman Rifles making their debut and a higher focus on soldier customization this could be the game that takes back the record of day one sales from Rockstar with their worldwide popular game GTA 5.

The Campaign story tries to add emotion to the series, with a cinematic film-like feel. Five men and their dog set to take back a world that is crippled beyond repair. The Ghost Squad is all they have left. It consists of five soldiers; including two brothers; with a range of skills to benefit the squad, using stealth and the shadows to their advantage. A very different concept to the hectic run and gun play style seen in the Multiplayer mode. Two new additional modes have been added to the game hoping to make it stand out from the rest.

Squad’s mode is a new mode that replaces the Spec Ops mode found in the Modern Warfare series, a mode that never won over the gaming community. This new mode combines the fun-filled engagements established in multiplayer with a new AI system making computerised soldiers, bots, which act like real human players. Finding yourself shouting and screaming at a computer-generated soldier. With all the soldier customization, classes and killstreaks found in multiplayer the game can be tailored to how you want to play it, while still earning experience points.

Another first for the Call of Duty franchise is the implementation of an all-new alien mode; Extinction. This mode is a take on the massively popular zombie’s mode, which Treyarch introduced in 2008. By adding both nimble and powerful aliens into a fallen world, Extinction causes the player to change their strategy from the multiplayer mode to a totally way to combat this problem. The player has to scavenge through the world, in order to survive and destroy all the alien hives, picking up new weapons and equipment. The new mode is sure to set a new high for the game, adding something completely new, which will get fans constantly returning year after year.

All in all, Call of Duty Ghosts is a game what people have come to expect from the franchise; while trying new paths and routes to try and change the game up a little. It is still the basic core of fast-action shooting on both current and next-gen consoles. The game continues with the same trend of the forever popular ModernWarfare series but fails to take many of the great things established by other development teams in last year’s instalment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. As the new and improved engine found in the game begins to give the impression, alight at the end of the tunnel. The game is a triumph of a series that is set to make the benchmark of a first-person, close-quarters, shoot em’ up style game, designed for the next generation of console gaming. The question still remains though, is it still going to be enough, to remain at the top of the charts at Christmas 2013? With many great games coming out this November, Battlefield 4 for example, it will be anybody’s game.
