2022 brought with it a significant rules change for F1 and this year the game needed to be updated to reflect that. Something which may seem minor but had an effect on the UI was the tyres. They have been changed from 13 inches to 18 inches in diameter along with wheel covers, which is better/easier for overtaking. There are various areas of the UI where we show a side profile of these tyres to referencing in 2d how they would look in real life. This imagery needed to be updated as the difference between the 2 sizes is quite noticeable. This is a small change but allowed us to go back and clean up the overall design, making the logos more readable and not as squashed. The size difference can be seen when comparing the new ones to the classic tyre icons. Along with this update, the areas they are used throughout the game received small visual upgrades to bring them more in line with the branding seen throughout the game's UI.
This type of update was also applied to other screens within the workstation. The 2 areas I worked on were the standings and trophies tabs. There was a couple of key things I wanted to achieve with this update along with subtle changes to the layout of these screens, improving spacing and fixing previously unnoticed issues relating to localisation (text in other languages). Firstly, bringing the difference back between primary & secondary panel backing for parts of the screen that are interactable vs static. Darker backing for interactive buttons etc, lighter for information & visual styling. The second thing feeds into the first change and makes the screen lighter to look at allowing the colours on the background and surrounding elements to shine through more. The trophy imagery on these 2 screens is looking quite basic now and not that great to look at. I would have liked to either update this to 3d renders or at least change each of the trophy icons to reflect the real-world variants awarded in each of these grand prix's. This would also improve the legibility between each race on the empty state version of this screen as well. Unfortunately, there was no support from other teams to help implement this change as all this was done closer to the end of the project, so would have required more time to complete/implement.
